Experience + Insight

5 things you need to know about the GPST Entry 2 exam:

Specialty Training

General Practice Specialty Training (GPST) is incredibly competitive due to the sheer volume of applicants, plus the high standards of the competency-based selection processes, which include a standard, national, and consistent staged process. The selection process is very thoroughly researched, and is designed to test all candidates on their skills, abilities, and their general suitability for GP training.

Recent Changes

The GP recruitment process has recently been updated, and subsequently placed a very high priority on the scores of candidates taking the General Practice Specialty Recruitment Assessment for GP Specialty Training (GPST). This means that achieving a high score is fundamental to following your desired career path, and requires a great deal of practice and revision in order for it to be obtainable.

Papers & Assessment

There are two papers used as the standard initial assessment for the GPST selection process: the Clinical Problem Solving paper, and the Professional Dilemma paper (otherwise known as the Situational Judgement Tests or SJTs), which are both computer-based. Timing can be an issue for these papers; the SJT paper gives you 110 minutes to answer 50 questions, so you only have two minutes per scenario, whereas the CPS paper only gives you 75 minutes to answer between 80-100 questions. The time limits are designed to test how you cope under pressure, which is where our mock exams come in handy, as they can help you prepare yourself.

Clinical Problem Solving

As a doctor, you’ll of course have to deal with multiple clinical scenarios every day, each of which will task you with exercising the appropriate judgement, diagnosis, and the management of your patients. This is what the Clinical Problem Solving paper is designed to test you on: not your knowledge, but your problem solving skills and how appropriately you apply them to each and every situation. Our Qbank is prepared for this, however, and allows you to test yourself on how appropriately you would react in clinical situations.

Professional Dilemmas

The Professional Dilemmas (otherwise known as Situational Judgement Tests) exam is an incredibly significant part of the GPST recruitment process. However, many doctors won’t ever have encountered questions like these in an exam before now, and won’t know how to fully consider all the ethical principles in this manner. This is why Pastest has strived so hard to provide applicants with such a wide and varied bank of questions, so that every candidate can ensure they are fully prepared for anything the Professional Dilemma paper, and real situations in the future, can throw at them.
