The UCAT stands for the University Clinical Aptitude Test. It’s an admissions test required by most UK medical and dental schools.The purpose of the UCAT is to assess a range of mental abilities and professional behaviours that are important to practice medicine in the UK. The UCATs usually take place in the summer before applying to university. UCAT revision is essential, as it will determine your place at medical school. The UCAT lasts about 2 hours and is split into 4 sections - verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, and situational judgement. Abstract reasoning has been removed as of 2025. You can only take the test once a year, so UCAT preparation is very important. 

The four sections are scored out of 2700, as of 2025. UCAT practice questions will no longer include any abstract reasoning. With Abstract Reasoning removed the total score will now be out of 2700 instead of 3600, which you should remember as part of your UCAT revision. Make sure to contact your chosen med school to find out the score you will need to get in. You only have 1 attempt a year to take it, so UCAT preparation is essential.

The UCAT format is different to previous years as of 2025, which is why UCAT preparation should be an essential part of your revision plan. The Verbal Reasoning section has 44 questions, and should take 22 minutes. The Decision Making section has 35 questions, and you are allotted 37 minutes to complete these. The Quantitative Reasoning section has 36 questions, and should take 26 minutes to complete. The Situational Judgement section had 69 questions, and should take 26 minutes.
