About the MRCPCH FOP Exam

FOP stands for Foundation of Practice. It is one of the three theory examinations required for MRCPCH membership and also forms part of the Diploma in Child Health. The MRCPCH FOP exam assesses the clinical knowledge, understanding and decision-making skills expected of a doctor entering core paediatric training. It was previously called MRCPCH Part 1A.

We recommend completing full timed Past Papers to improve time management and identifying weak areas to focus revision. There is no fixed MRCPCH FOP pass mark. The RCPCH establishes the pass mark for each exam sitting using the Angoff standard-setting method, with subject experts considering the difficulty of the questions. This means the required score can vary between sittings. Candidates must meet or exceed the pass mark set for their particular FOP exam.
