About the MRCPCH TAS Exam

TAS stands for Theory and Science and is one of the three theory examinations required for Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. It tests the scientific, physiological and pharmacological principles underlying paediatric clinical practice, including evidence-based medicine. TAS was previously known as MRCPCH Part 1B.

Yes. Under the current RCPCH exam format, the MRCPCH TAS exam contains 100 best-of-five single best answer questions and lasts two hours. Pastest has converted its previous extended matching questions into SBAs and updated its TAS past papers to reflect the current format.

Yes. The question banks reflect the different RCPCH FOP and TAS syllabi. The TAS question bank focuses on physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, genetics and immunology. The FOP question bank focuses more on clinical knowledge and decision-making across common areas of child health. Candidates taking both exams can also use the combined Pastest FOP and TAS platform.

Use the RCPCH TAS syllabus to structure your revision and combine subject reading with regular SBA practice. After studying each topic, use the Pastest question bank to test your understanding and review explanations for incorrect answers. Complete timed past papers closer to the exam to identify weaker areas and practise answering 100 questions within two hours.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health does not use a fixed TAS pass mark. The RCPCH sets the pass mark for each exam sitting using the Modified Angoff standard-setting method, which considers question difficulty. The score required to pass TAS can therefore vary between exam diets.
