The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step exam for medical licensure in the United States. USMLE Step 1 is the first of the three exam stages aimed at assessing a physician’s ability to provide safe and effective patient care.
Step 1 is a one-day examination divided into seven 60-minute blocks over the course of eight hours. The number of USMLE Step 1 questions in each block varies but does not exceed 40. All of the Step 1 questions have a vignette and a Single Best Answer (SBA). This means you must select the one best answer out of at least five potentials which may also be plausible. You can read more about the exam format and strategies for success in our Ultimate Guide to the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
